What kind of litter box and litter should I use?

Box type

Fact

Most cats prefer a large, UNCOVERED box — easier to get in and out of, and it doesn't trap odour. Some cats like a cover for privacy, but that's an individual exception, not the rule.

Size & sides

Fact

Big enough to stand on all fours and turn around in — bigger is better. High sides help a cat that scatters litter; low sides suit kittens and older/arthritic cats that struggle to climb in.

Litter

Fact

Most cats prefer fine-grained, UNSCENTED, scoopable (clumping) litter, filled to about 2 inches deep. Scented/deodorant litters put many cats off. Switch types gradually — mix the new litter in over several days.

Automatic / self-cleaning boxes

Estimate

Veterinary sources don't recommend for or against automatic boxes. If you use one, watch for any avoidance and keep a normal box available as a backup.

Keeping it clean (and less tracking)

Fact

Scoop daily, wash the box weekly with mild dish soap. To cut tracking, use a high-sided box and a litter mat at the exit.

Watch for

If a cat that was using its box SUDDENLY starts avoiding it, straining, or crying, that's a medical red flag — see a vet. This guide is for choosing a box/litter, not for sudden avoidance.
