How do I keep my cat safe in summer heat?

Keep it boring and cool: fresh water everywhere, shade and airflow, indoors during extreme heat, and never in a parked car. Cats hide heat stress until it's serious — panting is NOT normal cat cooling, it's a warning sign.Fact

Flat-faced (Persian/Exotic), senior, overweight, and heart/lung-condition cats overheat fastest and belong in air-conditioning during hot spells.

Applies to: All cats in warm weather; indoor cats in un-air-conditioned homes are at risk too. This is prevention — active overheating is an emergency (see escalate).

Normal vs keep-watching

Normal: A cat that seeks cool spots, drinks well, and rests through the hottest hours.

Keep watching: Panting (not normal for cats), lethargy in heat, drooling, fast breathing, gum color.

When to contact a vet. Excessive panting, difficulty breathing, drooling, weakness, stupor, collapse, seizures, or vomiting/bloody diarrhea in heat is a veterinary EMERGENCY — move the cat to shade/AC, offer water, and call a vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888) 426-4435 immediately. This page never tells you to cool a collapsing cat at home instead of calling.
